Man, I just find this so heartbreaking, so tragic. When I first heard about it I blew it off. At first, it was just another landslide and after all the rain we have had in the last month there's been a a lot.
I kept hearing more and more.
Then I saw a picture. Then another.
This was not just another mudslide; this was huge.
And so close to home.
Whoa.
Then I thought, "Oh my gosh. My Aunt and Uncle live off of 530!"
Sadly I realized I had no idea where since I hadn't seen them in years. (another post for another day) Thanks to Facebook I quickly found out they were fine, as were my cousin and his family who also live near the slide area.
I've read so many sad stories of the loss and the missing. That story of the 4 year old boy who was rescued. The boy's Mom was not at home but at work but the rest of the family is still missing. That poor boy. The fear that he experienced. Ugh. I can't even imagine. (Insert lump in throat.)
The Mom. She lost everything. Her husband, her other children. I can't imagine the pain...I just can't.
Then the Grandma, the firefighters wife, who was watching her 4 month old grand-daugher.
The people who were "just driving" on 530 who got swept away.
The list, the stories, they just go on. Each one just as heart breaking as the others.
Today I went into work. I was not prepared for the stories to become real. The driver of Darrington Hardware. Normally happy and upbeat, looked full of grief. A friend of his is missing....
A customer came in and the transaction started out normal. Then at the end he brought up the slide. His teenage son plays indoor football in Marysville, with the older brother of the 4 year old. Ugh. You could see his heart was broken. He mentioned that his son's team was to be at a game in Spokane Saturday, but it was canceled Friday. That family (of the 4 year old) would have been there, not at home when the slide happened. He knew that family, talked to them numerous times at the football games. He said the team have yellow ribbons to put on their jersey's. Yellow was the kids favorite color.
These people who have been affected, they aren't just in Oso or Darrington. They are everywhere; in all our local communities. Take the time to smile a little more frequently because chances are, at least one person you see will be somehow heartbroken by something in their life. Remember to kiss those you love and remind them just how much they mean to you because you just never know.
And pray for those who have lost family members, friends, or co-workers and for those who are still missing. They say some may never be found, again, I can't even imagine and I am so thankful I don't have to.

Anxiety.
I am pretty sure I have anxiety issues.
Going anywhere out of routine I get nervous, upset stomach (nauseous) and need to consciously breathe. No, I am not kidding, I get like this anytime we (I) go anywhere that is not in my normal day to day routine. On the way to taking Antonio to school on the day I was helping out in his classroom, I was a wreck. When I pulled a muscle in my back last week and was driving to the walk-in; I was a wreck. The list goes on, it's awful. When Antonio gets sick, it's the same thing.
There ought to be an anxiety pill specifically for Mom's (and Dad's too) for when their kid(s), baby, is sick. Really, there should be. Antonio has a bug. He woke up this morning sneezy, and a runny nose but nothing more. He ate like normal and acted normal so we went out our day. It wasn't until he asked to go up and take a nap (in his bed) in the middle of my workout...at 11:15 that I got concerned. I finished up, only about 10 min., and went up to check on him. Sure enough, he was in his bed with the light off, watching a show on his iPad, half asleep. He said he felt sick and needed to rest. I thought ok, go ahead and rest. He had a hard time breathing through his nose so I filled and turned on his humidifier. After about 20m he fell asleep, a good hour and a half before he usually naps. He slept for 1hr and 45m.
When he woke up he felt warm and my anxiety kicked in. He had gone to bed without lunch so I asked him if he was hungry for lunch, he said no. My anxiety kicked up another notch, he must really feel sick. We watched Toy Story while he clearly had a temperature by now. I convinced him to eat some apples and toast, which he did. When Toy Story was over he said he was sleepy and needed to back to his bed and snooze. By now he was feeling hot and was very lethargic. It was true, he caught a bug. He stayed in bed the rest of the afternoon and into the evening. He let me change his clothes so I could get him into jammies but thats about it. He wanted me or Albert to sit with him the whole time. :( Poor kid. We gave him a dose of tylenol to help him sleep and tucked him in for the night.
Here I lay, worried about him. My anxiety level is through the roof, partly feeling sick myself. Am I getting sick? Will he sleep through the night? Will he throw-up? Will his temperature go down? What happens if his temperature gets higher? What if, what if, WHAT IF??? I know in a week, hopefully much sooner, this will be a distant memory but for right now, as Peg in Peg + Cat (a PBS kid show) says, I am totally freaking out! :)
Damn you anxieties, damn you.

God, are you there?
*First and foremost, please don't judge me (or this post). These are MY thoughts and beliefs only. I know some of you may not agree but thats ok. And lastly, I don't want to be "preached" to about any of this.
As some of you have read in Antonio's blog we finally decided to send Antonio to the school up the road from us instead of where he goes now. As mentioned, one of my favorite things about his current school is that he is learning about God, which he most definitely won't learn about in a public school. When I asked him yesterday if he knew what tomorrow (today) was (his day to spend with Papa) he responded with "chapel day at school." I asked what he does in chapel time and he happily said, "I learn about God.". That made my heart full. :)
After reading the post, one of my dearest and most faithful friends, texted me with, "Ya know, you could always take Antonio to church to learn about God. :)". She has a point, which then started a brief conversation via text about why I (we) don't go to church and it started me thinking.
A big part of it is that I am not really sure what I believe. I do believe in God but, is it only because that is what I was brought up to believe? I do believe there is something bigger than me/us but I am not exactly sure what. Then there's that "what denomination do I fall under?" question. I need a crash course on each one. What is the difference between each one?
I do believe we are equal and should be treated that way. I also strongly believe we should be able to love (and marry) whomever we want. I also believe in abortion but never as a form of birth control. I want to be able to drink wine/alcohol (as much as I want at any given time) without being frowned on or judged. I, 100%, believe everything happens for a reason. I would like to be able to become friends with people from a church and be able to have some conversations that never mention the subject God. I would like to "belong" to a church but not actually "go" to church. Does that make sense?
I would love to be able to send Antonio to Sunday school, leave him and then go back and pick him up later. Ha. Seriously though, the whole church thing is intimidating. All the praying, singing, preaching all at once is a bit much for me. I want to pray, think and talk about God whenever I want, in my own time and on my own terms; not specifically every Sunday for an hour. Yes, someday I'd like to attend a church but I don't want to ever force Albert, let alone Antonio to go with me. I do know that I don't have to go to church to have God love me or to go to Heaven.
Thank you Erin for never scolding me (for things I've done that I know you didn't agree with) or forcing me to believe what you believe. And thank you for always loving me for me enough to ask "those" questions without pushing. :)

Kindergarten
Private or public
That is the question.
We had conferences last week for Antonio and turns out he is ready for Kindergarten! I was happy, excited, nervous and anxious all at the same time. That means Antonio is doing great socially and academically; which we kinda assumed!
However, that leads to the question. Go private or public?
Where he goes now they also have Kindergarten (and 1st grade). We love it there and have heard amazing things about their program. If we kept him there, he would go all day 8:50-2:45 M-Th with Friday being a half day. Of course that comes with a fee but we then would not have to pay for daycare. I could drop him every morning and Albert could pick him up. Timing works well. That does however assume our schedules wouldn't change. If they did we could be in a big pinch. The offset would save us money, not a lot but some. However, we would loose Mrs. Rosemary who we absolutely love. We are lucky enough to have her willing to told a spot for Antonio to be able to be there during the Summer. Yay! The ability to have her there to fall back on if needed (Winter/spring breaks etc) would not be there though. That is a bit stressful to me. The other negative is that he would go there (school) and then go to public in 1st grade. He wold have to make friends all over again. :/ However, his current teachers mentioned that he has made friends fairly easily this year.
For public school he would go to Sunnyside Elementary which appears from the road to be a bunch of portables. I admit, I have not gone up close to see them but that alone makes me lean the other direction. The kids at Rosemary's all go there. Mason, who is closest in age to Antonio is in Kindergarten there now and William (Rosemary's son) went there and is in 1st grade now; so he'd have a couple friends there and on the bus. Rosemary says Sunnyside is great now and that it's the best it's been in awhile. Apparently they have a new principle who is very hands on. If we send him to Sunnyside we will keep him at Rosemary's and continue to pay her (obviously) year round but would still be saving money compared to this year because we won't be paying for Pre-K. On days he goes to Ms. Rosemary's he would be picked up from her house and taken to school by bus (which makes me nervous) so the to/from school aspect is easy with public school. Also, on school breaks he would go to Ms. Rosemary's versus us having to stay home with him (if we went private).
In a sense for me, it really breaks down to this;
Go private and get an excellent education and be very comfortable with the school but Albert/I would have to take time off of work for no school days & hope our schedules stay flexible.
Go public and stress level for me goes down as far as child care but education and school would be basic.
We save money either way. Albert really likes where he is now (as do I) and seems to be leaning that way but the lack of childcare/back up plan stresses me out. I hate leaning on my Mom so much. Not that she'd be much help with the Winter/Spring breaks etc. I hope to tour Sunnyside this week or next. Registration starts Tuesday, the 11th, for where we are now and is open until it fills up. Sunnyside is now until June. Why is this so stressful. Part of me wishes there were just no options. Sigh.... Wish me luck!

I want a "do-over"
Christmas always has such a big build-up. And it's usually a build-up to Christmas morning and within an hour or so you are either on a "christmas high" or left feeling completely let down. I saw a lot of people on Facebook and Twitter complaining about a "Christmas hangover" even though they didn't drink anything.
I felt the same way.
This was the year of duplicate gifts too. I went to 3 separate gatherings and at each one, at least 1 person received a duplicate gift. It was weird (and dissappointing), rarely does that happen.
Antonio asked for two things from Santa; a Buzz Lightyear and a guitar. At the Schneidler get together, his cousin Anna drew his name (all the cousins draw names and exchange gifts) and just happened to have a Buzz Lightyear (and two Jessie's)! So he got that from her and he was happy. In fact Christmas Eve we went over to our neighbors for a bit and he, our neighbor asked Antonio what he wanted; Antonio told him but then said that he already got a Buzz Lightyear but not the guitar and that was ok. Apparently he thought THAT was Christmas. He was so causal about not getting the guitar and so we explained that Santa hadn't even come yet. It was good to know he'd be ok without!
Well Christmas morning came and of course Santa brought his guitar. He exclaimed, "I got everything I wanted!". Then turned around to point at all the other gifts saying, "I didn't even want all the other stuff." Point taken kid; next year we will only get what he asks for. It will surely save us some money! :) So that alone was awesome. Antonio got what he wanted and he was so happy!
However, it went downhill fast from there. We went to my Aunts for the afternoon and dinner only to have to leave before dinner because Antonio got sick. Not just not feeling good, but throwing up. :( It was awful. We quickly gathered our things and left. We were home by 5, without a Christmas dinner. Poor Antonio looked terrible too. Happily he woke up the next more feeling better! Phew.
Christmas eve we did nothing. Albert and I both ran but that was about it. It was nice but looking back, I wished we had done something Christmasy. A part of me feels robbed out of the Christmas fun. In the sense that Christmas Eve we did nothing then Christmas morning came and went only to be home before 5 with no dinner and then just like that it was over. :/
I want a do over.
I would have us all do something as a family, maybe a new tradition, on Christmas Eve. Christmas day have it not be so rushed (arrived late at my Aunts then left early) and not have Antonio get sick (obviously) so he could have fun with his cousins and then have a big yummy dinner. Sigh. I know we don't always get what we want and things definitely don't always go how we want them to (or expect them to), especially with a kid. But I LOVE Christmas time. We usually keep all our decorations, tree included, up until after New Years but Antonio asked it we could take it all down today and I was strangely ok with it. It was just a weird Christmas this year.
I especially can't wait for next year now; it will bet better.
Only 362 more days until Christmas! :)

Count your blessings
It's 10 days until Christmas.
TEN.
Are you ready?! Happily, I am all done shopping except for 1 gift; a gift card, so it's easy! I am so excited! This is, by far, my favorite time of year. All the excitement, happiness and food, don't forget all the cookies, cakes and now that Albert doesn't eat meat, MEAT!! Really. I look forward to going to peoples house for meals in hopes there will be meat now! Ha!
I have also realized over the past couple weeks how incredibly lucky I am. I have an amazing husband and kid; my little family of three is perfect. We both have a job and a roof over our heads. We also have had no real tragedy happen to us. In the past couple weeks I've had some friends and family share their sad, new realities with me. I feel so badly for these people but because of all the grief I've heard I've also realized how incredibly lucky I am.
My Uncle (my Dad's brother) passed away last week due to a very long struggle with diabetes. A friend of mine has become a single Dad with a young, special needs daughter, whom he shares custody with his ex. Albert's co-workers wife, will be taking their 2.5 year old to spend time with her family out of state (she is a stay-at-home Mom) over Christmas because her Dad is very ill and could pass away any day now. So he,Albert's co-worker, will be alone over the holidays because the wife isn't sure when they will be back. :( (Luckily his family lives very close)
These situations are just some of the sad realities I've heard about recently. I'd give almost anything to take away these peoples (including the ones I didn't mention) pain. So count your blessings people. I mean really. You may not get (or receive) that perfect gift this Christmas for (or from) someone or the stress of it all may get you down but at least you have your spouse and/or your family with you. It's the little things we need to remember and appreciate, especially this time of year when the focus is so much on family.
My Dad however, is slowly reuniting with his family he was stripped from so early in life. As I told my cousin, her Dad is now with family he hasn't seen in years. My Grandma passed away when I was very young, then it was my Dad. About 10 years ago my Grandpa passed away, then this Fall my Aunt and now my Uncle. I hardly knew my Uncle, he and his family lived in Montana for as long as I can remember but I still feel his loss. I am incredibly sad for my cousins and Aunt who now have to learn to live without him. Please pray for them, pray for them to get through the holidays with as much happiness and love as possible.
Getting together with family may not be your favorite thing to do; it can be stressful or even miserable for some but they are your family. Remember, someday, they will no longer be here. Hug the ones you love a little tighter this holiday; because you can.

Updates and important info!
Apparently I went on an unplanned blogging hiatus. It has been months since my last post on here or on Antonio's blog (with the exception on last nights post). If you want to hear all about how Antonio's doing head on over to his page. If you don't want to do all that work (really?), just know four is treating us well and he is great and loving school.
The last time I left off I was getting glasses and was going to attempt to go dairy free.
I got my glasses and they do seem to help when reading (magazines or the computer). In fact when I don't use them I get headaches. Antonio says I look like "a person", whatever that means. I guess its better to look like a person than a cow or something else, right? I'll take what I can get for a 4 year old!
My attempt at going dairy free has worked well. I feel good. I miss ice cream, like real ice cream, like nobody's business. And when I make a grilled cheese it take every ounce of will power not to eat a piece of cheese. They (again, who do they think they are?!?) say that after awhile I won't crave it or even want it. Well how long is awhile because I may not actually crave it, but I salivate when making a grilled cheese for Antonio. What is wrong with me?! Anyways, I have managed to survive with out so far. Hooray!
For the two bits of important info:
One. If you missed it on FB last night, my step-brothers non profit is now a charity you can automatically "give" to when you shop on Amazon. For everything you buy, 1% of it goes to his non profit. If you don't know about it, it is the Childrens Law Center of Washington and he does amazing things. Basically, for families who cannot afford the legal fees of adoption he (and his team) provide free or low-cost legal services to them in order for them make their family permeant and legal. It's pretty great. So many kids have permeant homes now because of this and they no longer have to worry about being taken away from what they know and need. All you have to do is link up your amazon account and it automatically donates 1%. It's that easy!! Here is the specifics from his CLCW FB page:
So if you plan on shopping, or already shop, on Amazon, link up your account. I did it and it only took maybe 15 seconds. SO EASY! Please go do it before you order another thing. It doesn't cost you anything extra.
Two. Omar got a new job with the Detroit Tigers! If you haven't read about it click here. If I understand this right, he will also be a first base coach. So when the Tigers come to town you'll know where I'll be sitting; and cheering for the coach! :) As soon as we can buy tickets we will! Already looking forward to it!
Now, if you are still here reading, thanks but now go to Amazon to link up your account so you can donate! I'm done here; so go...NOW!
